Computer Check Up
Computers, like people, need occasional check ups. I'm going to walk you through the whys and hows of doing computer check ups.
Why You Should Do Computer Check Ups
Computers can have all kinds of problems. From running slow, to exe and dll errors, to programs crashing your system, or even system freezes and the dreaded “blue screen of death”. With just a few steps, you can minimize or even fix this errors. If you use basic computer maintenance steps, you can prevent these issues all together.
How To Do Basic Maintenance
The first step we need to do is run a scan disk and disk defragmenter. Fortunately, in Vista these steps are combined, in XP you have to do them separately.
These steps are for Windows Vista users:
-
Go to your Start menu
-
Go to Accessories
-
Click on System Tools
-
Click Disk Defragmenter
-
Click on the “Defragment Now” button
-
You want to make sure “Select all Disks” is selected, then tell it to start
-
Now leave your computer alone until Disk Defragmenter is completed
These steps are for Windows XP users:
-
Go to your Start menu
-
Click on Accessories
-
Click on System Tools
-
Choose Scan Disk
-
Select your drive C: and have it run
-
Once Scan Disk is complete follow steps 1-3 and pick Disk Defragmenter
-
Choose your C: drive and have it start
-
Leave your computer alone till Disk Defragmenter is completed
Now that you've done the most basic maintenance there is, you need to go a step further and use a registry cleaner.
What is a Registry Cleaner and What Can it do For You?
A registry cleaner is a program written to go into the registry, and then safely and effectively repair damage to your computer's registry.
Registry corruption is a fact of life with computers, this can be serious because your registry is the core programming code of your Windows operating system.
If anything is wrong with your registry, there will be far-reaching effects which you can have a hard time tracking down the cause. Going into the registry yourself without a registry cleaner is not something I would suggest.
It is just too easy to do more damage to your computer that way. If you have ever had a virus infection or a spyware infection on your computer, I can guarantee you have some registry errors right now.
A good registry cleaner will address empty registry keys, ActiveX problems, shortcut issues, and COM issues. Exe and dll errors as well as slow computer issues will also be addressed by the use of a good registry cleaner.
