Fix Sound Card Problems with RealTek
RealTek sound cards and audio codecs heighten your PC’s sound quality and output, but if a RealTek device malfunctions, then silence or irritating static might be the only sound coming out of your speakers. Usually you can fix RealTek problems simply by updating your driver.
Here, we’ll discuss the easiest ways to resolve problems with RealTek devices.
Diagnose the Problem with your RealTek Device
It is very important to pinpoint the culprit of the problem. You can do this by using Device Manager. Here’s how:
-
Click Start.
-
Go to Control Panel.
-
Click System.
-
Select the tab labeled Hardware.
-
Open Device Manager. All devices will be displayed with Device Manager. If a yellow question mark or yellow exclamation mark is displayed next to a device, then that device does not function properly.
Look at your sound devices. If you see one of these symbols, then you know that something is wrong with the sound device, and it’s most likely the driver.
Download a New Driver from RealTek.com
The majority of computer device manufacturers store a database of drivers on their website. These drivers are related to the products that they sell. RealTek’s website is no exception.
Follow these steps to download and install a new driver for your sound card:
-
Open a web browser and go to RealTek’s website, located at www.realtek.com
-
See the "Downloads" link at the top of the page? Click on that.
-
The Downloads page will open, along with some "Hot Downloads." Look at the left menu, and hover your mouse over "Computer Peripheral ICs."
-
Hover over PC Audio Codecs, then High Definition Codecs, and then click Software.
-
You will need to check the box next to the text "I accept to the above" (RealTek has a funny sense of grammar.) Then, click Next.
-
The following page displays a list of codecs divided up by operating system. Find your operating system and your appropriate codec. Then, click one of the "GO" links located on the right side of the page. This will take you to a page where you can initiate the download.
-
Download the codec and save it somewhere memorable on your computer.
Extracting and Installing The RealTek Driver
Once you have completed downloading, double-click the file. Since the file is zipped, you’ll need to extract it to a certain folder. Open the folder and open the file named setup.exe.
A setup screen will open, and all you have to do is click "Next."
Once the installation is complete, you’ll need to restart your computer. Once the computer has restarted, open the Device Manager to see if Windows recognizes the device.
Also, test your sound. Hopefully, your speakers are back on track and you can start listening to your favorite music once again.
