Prevent DLL Errors

Do you get unexplained DLL errors? Do you want to know how to prevent DLL errors altogether? Don't worry too much about the DLL errors. The chances are your computer will be able to work through them. However, they are inconvenient. Luckily, you can take care of them.

What Is The DLL?

While you may see DLL errors all the time, you may not know exactly what it is. DLL stands for dynamic link library. This is also known as your computer's registry. In essence, the registry keeps track of every single program and application in your computer. Even applications on the Internet that your computer uses will place a file in your computer's registry.

What Causes DLL Errors?

This is actually very complicated. Almost anything can cause an error to occur in the DLL. It can be a tiny power spike, a improperly shut down computer, another program overwriting a good file, or any number of other things.

The majority of the problems are not malicious. They are just run of the mill errors that happen to everyone. At the bottom, we will discuss how to resolve more malicious types of DLL errors.

How to Fix Non-Malicious DLL Errors

The first thing you need to do is reboot your computer. This will cancel out any program that is running and allow your computer to start over. If the error was due to lack of memory or a random glitch, a reboot will help.

Next, you want to update your program. Let's say you got a DLL error while running Microsoft Office. Sometimes, simply updating the software will fix the error. (Updating is a good practice and should be done regularly anyway.)

To Update Microsoft:

  1. Click Start

  2. Click Programs

  3. Click Windows Update (You must have Internet Explorer 8 to run the update.)

Alternatively, you can go directly to Update.Microsoft.Com. Again, you will need to run Internet Explorer 8 for this to work.

How to Resolve Malicious DLL Errors

When the above issues do not resolve the problem, you need to consider a malicious attack. In this case, anti-virus and anti-spyware scans may help.

To resolve the issue complete the following steps:

  1. Find a reputable company and scan your computer for both spyware and viruses.

    1. Reputable companies will offer free scans and some sort of warranty.

    2. You can find free anti-spyware and anti-virus companies, but be very careful as many are spyware in disguise.

    3. Never download anti-spyware from a pop-up window on a random site. These fake security warnings look authentic but are nothing more than malware.

  1. If any are found, then you need to remove them via the anti-spyware and anti-virus software programs.

Prevent DLL Errors with a Registry Cleaner

Unfortunately, spyware and virus programs can leave behind errors even after they are cleaned. They leave behind little bits of code that anti-virus and anti-spyware programs leave behind. The only way to get rid of these is with a registry cleaner.

Cleaners are simple and easy to use. Generally, you can set them to run automatically when you are not using your computer. This allows your registry to stay clean without ever having to see a DLL problem again.
