Outlook Express Errors
If you’re having Outlook Express errors, the first thing you should look for is registry errors. Ninety-nine times out of one hundred, this is where all software problems originate. Here’s a brief overview of the problem and what you can do to fix it.
Meet Your Windows Registry
The Windows registry is an important part of your Windows program. It’s where all the operational files are kept. If these files aren’t working or can’t be found, you start having software and system errors.
Think of it like a filing cabinet. Files need to be thinned and repaired periodically. If you don’t do this, you wind up with an overstuffed filing cabinet where you can’t find anything. You’ll also have files that you can’t use because they’re torn. The same is true of your Windows registry.
How Registry Problems Happen
Much like in the filing cabinet example, your registry can get cluttered and files can get damaged. When you uninstall programs from your computer, they sometimes leave their registry files behind.
These files are called “orphans” for that reason. Because they’re doing nothing but taking up space in your registry, your computer has a harder time finding files you need, and it may not even find them. This can slow down your computer, and even cause errors with programs like Microsoft Outlook.
Damaged, or “corrupt” files are either a result of wear or malicious software. What essentially happens is that some of the script is lost from being used or it’s erased by malicious software. Imagine having an important legal document that’s been torn in half and half of it’s missing.
How to Fix Registry Issues
There are several ways to fix registry issues. The “old school” method involves browsing through the registry folders and removing or fixing bad registry files. Considering the number of files in the registry and the non-user friendly way they’re labeled, it’s not recommended unless you’re a technician. If you remove the wrong files, you could make your computer’s problems even worse.
There are “assistant” programs out there, too. They’re only slightly more helpful to the average user. What they do is generate a list of possible registry problems. They contain a legend so you can translate what kind of registry files they are. Again, it’s possible to remove the wrong registry files if you’re not an expert. Besides, these programs are more helpful if you have a spyware or virus problem than if you have a registry issue.
There is also registry cleaning software out there. This is the best option for the average PC user. It takes all the guesswork out of registry cleaning, and it only takes five minutes or so to run. Compared to the completely manual method, it’s a difference between a week of technical work versus five minutes of doing virtually nothing. Compared to the “assistant” software, it’s a difference between a day and five minutes. In the end, it’s no contest.
